1980 RC125MT Twin

This page is dedicated to former Mugen,Yamaha and Honda factory rider Kenji Sato

Mr. Sato lost his life in a tragic traffic accident on December 4th 2015. He was 58 years old. Our deepest condolences and prayers go out to his family. The following photos were taken during a run in test session of the 1980 RC125MT. Kenji Sato is the rider in the photos. He was a former Mugen, Yamaha and HRC factory rider. Godspeed Mr. Sato.

The 124cc twin works Honda made 35 HP at 13,000 RPM and had 6 and 7 speed gearboxes available. The twin cylinder bikes were banned by the FIM and AMA almost immediately and therefore the world never got to see this amazing works bike in action. It is truly an engineering marvel. The following photos were taken by a friend of ours Nen Uchida in Japan.

US team manager Dave Arnold commented that his team tested one of these bikes in 1981 in Yucca Valley California. During this secret test session his observations were that it was so loud that the shrieking sound of the engine at 13,000 RPM's drowned out the sound of nearly all other bikes on the track. He also said that it revved so fast that you could barely hear the rider change gears. Also a single cylinder was more effective in most situations where torque was important, like sand, mud etc. As far as acceleration goes, nothing to keep up with it, it was a rocket.
